Home Rewire

If your about to embark on a home rewire journey take a look at our top 10 tips to help prepare.

Our Top 10 Tips:

1.  Dust sheets – Its inevitable there will be some dust when rewiring. Our team will provide dust sheets for every project but we also encourage clients to do some sheeting prior to our arrival to really reduce left over dust. Plastic sheets are best, and we advise sealing them at the bottom if possible

2. Small Items – Our team are prepared to help move any heavy items, but we insist on all small loose items being stored away either in boxes, or in an areas we wont be working.

3. Positioning – We require all items to be moved away from the walls allowing approximately 1 meter space perimeter around the room. Its also worth noting we require access up to the light fittings, and should be able to get steps ladders underneath the light to work.

4. Plan Locations – Its important you put some thought into the locations of your new socket outlets and also think about any future requirements. Our teams can offer guidance but you should think about things like bed positions, computer areas, external lighting, TV wiring and anything else that may involve distributing your decor later.

5. Move Out – L J Norton aim to complete your rewire in 5 days. If its possible for you to move out we do recommend this. You are able to stay at home if this is your only option but we usually suggest spending the day out of the property. This allows us to work quicker as we do not need to make the place habitable and this also reduces your exposure to dust.

6.Rewiring Re-instatement. – After rewiring you will have to make good the damage with plaster and then arrange to decorate the property. Its important to have the plastering done along side rewiring, as this will seal up any cuts and chases and avoid further dust within the project. L J Norton can bond up any chase work in your home ready for the plasterer to come and take over.

7. Be Clear, Concise and Decisive – We recommend creating a small floor-plan or at least having a thorough agreed layout for your electrical installation that you can relay to our team. Its important to make your thoughts and plans clear to your electrician to avoid any mis-understanding during rewiring. We recommend a site visit before works commence on any bigger projects. It can be difficult to move the positions of electrical items once installed so make sure you plan it well and we know exactly where to put your new points.

8. Trust The Experts – L J Norton have been rewiring homes for many years and faced all different types of challenges. Our teams are highly experienced in the job and can offer sound advice with regards to rewiring.

9. Manage expectations – Our aim is to make this project as hassle free as possible, and ensure it goes as smoothly as rewiring can. However, its worth remembering the scale of the project in hand. Rewiring is a major refurbishment task with works and disruption in every room and area of your home. There will be some dust, some mess and some decoration but its all normal.

10. Don’t Stress – The disruption to a property when rewiring can sometimes be very very stressful. L J Norton often work with clients who’s home is in great condition yet needs to be rewired. Understand that the job is essential to the safety of your home and its occupants, and on completion you will have a fully modernised electrical system to deal with the demands of todays electrical devices.
